University of Logistics to open in Hamburg

Wednesday, 10 March 2010

THE KÜHNE School of Logistics and Management, whose sole shareholder is the non-profit Kuehne Foundation, is founding an independent university, the Kühne Logistics University (KLU) in Hamburg.

In the next five years, the KLU plans to develop two international non-consecutive Master’s and Bachelor’s degree courses and a continuing education programme.

There will also be a PhD fellowship programme as well as international and interdisciplinary research.

The KLU’s central theme is Business Management, with a particular focus on logistics.

It plans to launch in October with the MSc in Global Logistics course including a period of study at one of its Asian, European or American partner schools.

State recognition is to be applied for from the education and science authorities in Hamburg, and discussions have been promising, said the KLU.

Dirk Laschke told Lloyd’s Loading List: “Being an independent university will allow us to sharpen our profile as the University for Logistics, management and leadership. It also allows us to react to changes and trends in the education market.

“We put one of our main focuses on the executive education market. The campus in the Hafen City will offer a much more business-related atmosphere.

The executive market also puts certain demands on a faculty, which are often not met by faculty members involved in graduate education.
